Protecting Your Bone the Moment a Tooth Is Removed
Why You Need It
When a tooth is extracted, the socket — the bony housing that held the root — begins to collapse almost immediately. Without stimulation from a tooth root, the body resorbs the surrounding bone rapidly: studies show up to 40–60% of ridge width can be lost in the first six months following a simple extraction.
If you are considering an implant in the future, that bone loss matters enormously — it can mean the difference between a straightforward implant placement and a costly bone grafting procedure. Socket preservation performed at the time of extraction keeps the site in the best possible condition for what comes next.
The Process
Immediately after a tooth is removed, the empty socket is cleaned and filled with a bone graft material — typically a combination of bone particles and a collagen membrane. This scaffold holds the socket open, encourages the body's own bone-forming cells to migrate in, and prevents the soft tissue from collapsing into the space.
The site is then covered with a protective membrane and sutured closed. Over the following four to six months, the graft material is gradually replaced by your own native bone — leaving a well-preserved ridge ready to receive an implant when you're ready.
The Outcome
Graft material maintains the socket's three-dimensional shape, minimizing the ridge resorption that otherwise begins within weeks of extraction.
A preserved ridge reduces the likelihood of needing complex bone grafting before implant placement — saving time, cost, and recovery.
Performed in the same appointment as the tooth removal, so there is no additional surgical visit — just one healing period to manage.
If you're facing an extraction, ask Dr. Paulina Labuz about socket preservation — the best time to protect your bone is at the moment of removal.
